In a little back alley of row houses and small white picket fences I watch my grandmother in the kitchen as she places the chair next to the stove.

She would straighten my hair today.

It’s summer; the back door is open. I can see my grandfather tending to his garden of tomatoes and gardenias.

I close my eyes and delight in the smells of Cherry Kool aid and my frying hair mingling with the summer breeze of freshly-turned earth.
