For The Sake Of Her Child

She gave him the best with what her body could buy

For The Sake Of Her Child

His mother lay with rich men
While the world called her a whore
But no one knew the reason
She kept coming back for more

She had no gold to give him
No riches in her hand
So she sold pieces of herself
To keep him fed and warm

She swallowed every dirty look
And every whispered lie
Then smiled when he was sleeping
And quietly broke inside

The rich men thought they owned her
With their money and their beds
But she was buying back his future
With the tears she never shed

He grew up far from poverty
Never knowing what she’d done
While she carried every secret
Of the battles she had won

She watched him wear clean clothing
And saw happiness in his eyes
And every time he called her mother
She forgot the nights she’d cried

He never knew the price she paid
Or the shame she chose to bear
For every man who touched her body
Was a future waiting there

So don’t you dare call her wicked
Or judge the life she led
His mother lay with rich men
So her child could sleep in bed
