Flesh and Stone

Flesh tears on stone, but the stone will always move.

The Giants live.

___________

They breath in thin oxygen and exhale storm clouds.

Wishes and dreams larger than the life in our veins

Crackle like lightning across the sky

While miles below eyes glittering with the power

Of a fresh sunrise, we wake to see broad shoulders

Blotting out the light of impossibility.

___________

The Giants, they live!

___________

Far above the safe sanctuary of blue, their pale eyes

Track red-hot meteorites and catch them like snowflakes,

Swallow them down and ingest the medicinal stardust

Until blackholes swirl in their center and not even gravity

Dares to disobey the depths of their dreams.

___________

The giants are here.

___________

Listen! Listen to the thunder splitting the ice,

Feel the ground trembling beneath you, rattling skyscrapers

And businessmen alike while monstrous men make their final stand

Trapped beneath the pressure only gods can bear.

The Earth cracks before they do.

___________

Giants do not crumble.

___________

They dig in, slip on the crust and form mountains.

Feet settle in ravines and canyons, etching into history

Their battle with the laws of the universe,

The fight creating galaxies in their vision and stellar nurseries

In the sinewy muscles rippling with exertion.

___________

They are humanity’s saving grace.

___________

Giants, they’re the unrelenting, undeterred monsters in our souls

Unafraid to stand tall and drink from the black skies

Of discomfort and pain, unwilling to bow to stone and steel.

If the world explodes, so be it.

They will grab the globe between wide palms and squeeze

Until it glues itself back together.

___________

Atlas carried the Earth; the Giants hold it together.

___________

And when the Giants die, when they collapse back in a colossal crash

To the wondrous green Earth that spawned their greatness,

When stardust and blood explodes from their flesh

Another will need to rise in their wake to take up the mantle,

To remove the new limiter on humanity with snarling teeth

And hearts made of mountain air and unbridled power.

___________

The Giants, they live.

___________

Thank you for reading. This one is special because it's a little different than normal. I meshed two worlds: nature poetry and strongman. This was actually inspired by the contest "Giants Live" (as in live show). In particular, I was thinking about Bill Kazmaier and Evan Singleton. Not just some of the strongest men but clearly men who inspire hope, dream, and hard work into so many others.

Anyway, as usual you can find me on ko-fi, buy me a coffee, and Instagram by Silver Serpent Books just like here.
