No joy from this hunt

Farmer Pete was distraught,

With the rabbits at his place.

Right there beside his veggie patch

He often gave them chase.

All around the veggie patch

There hadn't been a single one close to getting caught.

Farmer Pete grew red with rage,

He needed to hatch a plan.

I’ll chase them with my trusty rake

I’ll get as many as I can.

Before they realise their mistake,

I’ll herd them into my cage.

He waited for them to arrive

And when all were feeding on his patch

He crept around with his rake in hand.

Contemplating how many he would catch

Things did not turn out as planned,

They hid under cabbage plants in order to survive.

Farmer Pete had not a clue.

Where the rascally rabbits had gone

He had to take a closer look,

So put his rake down on the lawn.

The rabbits saw their only chance, which they all took

And off they ran all at once, everyone on cue.

Run rabbit, run rabbit

Run, run, run,

Let’s all head for home,

Dodge, bunny, dodge bunny,

To the left, then to the right.

Run rabbit, dodge bunny,

You are almost there, alright.

Farmer Pete got up too quick

Overcome with grief.

Clear forgot where he’d put his rake

And to his total disbelief,

Put his foot down on the rake

Got it right between the eyes with the stick.

He saw stars and wobbled around.

He cursed and swore, but all too late,

The rabbits knew exactly when to go.

Across the lawn, under the gate

They made it back to their burrow.

Farmer Pete just sat and frowned.

[Author's note: A sestet style poem with a rhyming pattern - ABCBCA that features a non-rhyming sestet interlude. It lends itself to a children's poem in the vein of Peter Rabbit and Mr MacGregor.]

Till next time,
