Fall back

with quiet feet

Leaves of course, that crunch and crackle, all across the street

gold and brown and rusted red, floating at your feet

The trees are bare and burden-less, waiting for the sleep

that comes but once a year for them, three months for them to keep

It's colder too, but not yet chill, and so you walk along

the air is fresh but somehow warm, the wind a changing song

that darts and dips around your head, light and yet so strong

enough to push you further in, further into the throng

They mill about with drinks in hand, of every flavour known

hazel, caramel, pumpkin spice, all topped with endless foam

that's whipped and sweet and oh-so-good, it almost makes you moan

to sip it hot, and blow your breath, up where the clouds have flown

You can't stay long, for up ahead, the apples and the squash

are neatly clumped in rows ten deep, so tight it's quite the mosh

a pit of produce, shining bright, all dirt scrubbed off in wash

here to be bought, and later ate, at tables poor and posh

Past scarves and beanies, woollen socks, mittens and gloves galore

you don't need these, at least not yet, not for a count of four

more weeks that is, so why the rush, to get to winter's roar?

better yet to fill your cup, of harvest cheer do pour

The crowd grows quiet as you move, up hill and over ground

where birds are dreaming silently, no predators around

to break the gentle resting time, to which all nature's bound

and so you sit on empty bench, and watch without a sound.

October's here, and shan't be rushed, so settle in and see

how good it is, to laugh and cheer, and finally, to be.
