Faithful Friend

You wait where the light leans softly on the floor,

Eyes steady, full, never turning away,

In your silence there is a knowing so deep,

A truth that no human tongue could ever say.

I cross the room and you rise like morning,

As if my shadow alone calls your name,

No question asked, no doubt ever spoken,

Only a love that burns without shame.

You watch my hands, you read every tremble,

You hear the sigh I try hard to hide,

And when the world leaves me tired and emptied,

You come and settle close at my side.

He speaks in words that fall and scatter,

Busy with things that pull him apart,

But you, my dog, you gather the pieces,
