Forget us not

We were alive at one time

We lived and breathed

We loved and wondered

And yes we dreamed

We felt our hearts beat to the rhythm of the wind

We felt the cool rains dance upon our flesh

We welcomed the burning sun that gave us life

And the cold winters snows that nestled the plants while they slumbered

We adapted

We survived

We rejoiced with the glow of morning light

And we both welcomed and feared the hollow black night

We would gaze upon the multitude of twinkling lights in the dark skies

We watched as they drifted across the dark ocean above

We wondered why they called to our souls

And like the celestial beings above, we thought we would be here forever

We were more than predator and prey

We roamed the ancient lands like Gods

We were rulers of a new world

And we never knew what we had until it vanished

Who were we?

What happened to all our brethren?

Where are we now?

When we realized our time was finite, did we wonder,

Why did we vanish when the world was once ours?

We are more than a child’s toy, a plastic shape of wonder

We are more than illustrations created by imaginative minds

We were not mindless creatures stumbling around

And in the grand scheme of the universe, our lives were ephemeral

We were less then a blip, a mere blink in time

We returned to the earth that nurtured us

We wonder, will your bones one day be discovered?

And will they speculate on who you really were

We are the same

We rejoiced with the birth of our young

We wept if they perished

It was a hard life

It was challenging

It was wonderful

We are now gone

Our foot falls will never tremor the earth

Our presence dissipated with time

Our cries will no longer echo across the plains

We shall only inhabit the minds of imaginations

Let us live once more in lore

Let us never be forgotten

Let our existence mean something

We loved and wondered

We lived and breathed

We were alive at one time

Thank you,

Jason

Absolutely loved your poem, JBaz! Filled to the brim with life and wonder. Beautiful and dripping with longing. A reminder of the fragility of existence, including our own.

  • Fantastic writing.

  • An interesting dinosaur perspective… I liked: ‘And in the grand scheme of the universe, our lives were ephemeral We were less then a blip, a mere blink in time We returned to the earth that nurtured us We wonder, will your bones one day be discovered? And will they speculate on who you really were”
