Edinburgh

Scotland

From the train go up

up that twisted road

and first find a pub

on the Royal Mile

before all things

before you unpack or sleep

you must listen to the people

let their accents tell you

where you are

taste their food

drink their drink

feel the cobblestone turn under foot

find your tartan or adopt one

hear the bagpipes in the air

broken only by ancient church bells

that cry for the ghosts

underground or trapped in graveyards

where the dead still play

then hike up Arthur’s Seat and

stand against all winds

all directions

to overlook the majesty of Edinburgh

a castle on every corner

a drink in every hand
