"Let us eat and drink; for tomorrow we shall die." — Isaiah 22:13

_____________________

Engines, are we(,) in homeostasis(?)

Eating, drinking, and making our merry

Wine, women, and song, our paraphrases

Booze, belles, and ballads sing as we're buried

.

Innuendos live in parentheses

Make waste, guiltless and epicurean

Tasting ambrosia, and hiding disease

Consumption portends Pythagorean

.

Reaching for the cups that stand out of bounds

Leaving a wake's waste in pathway of yours

Golden chalices that swallow the sounds

Of causes that disembowel our cores

.

Connected by desire and resumption

(In)considerate(,) spoils never grieve

Myopic'ly challenged in assumption

Of stacking the deck with cards up our sleeves

.

How much will we eat, how much shall we drink

How much waste will we produce in arrears

Is guided by the wayward way we think

And washed away by our hist'ry in tears

Afterparty

I had to look up ‘Isaiah 22:13 This is still over my head, all I truly know is that for some reason I enjoyed this, because I appreciate reading something knowing I can never write with such style.

Oh this was awesome! "Booze, belles, and ballads sing as we're buried" is 100% my favourite line. Best of luck in the challenge!

  • Oooo, I loved what you crafted using that photo! Who's was it? Sorry I just saw it yesterday but I forgot 😅😅

This is amazing, Gerard! A scathing commentary on the pleasures and the curse of modernity. Makes me wonder what you might render from Joel 2:25.

  • Your invocation of Isaiah 22:13 adds a rich, philosophical layer to the poem, exploring themes of indulgence and mortality. The vivid imagery and rhythmic flow enhance the poem's impact, making it both engaging and reflective. Your ability to weave together historical references and contemporary issues is truly impressive. Thank you for sharing such an evocative and insightful work.

  • Nice entry for the challenge!
