Maybe I should have been softer.

Kinder in the approach of silence.

.

Maybe I should have wrapped you in silk

Instead of burning ambitions and dreams.

.

Maybe the words on my tongue deserved

Their own space in your mouth, tasted.

.

The necklace on my neck is a chain, burning.

And I can taste my prison sentence like saline.

.

It's cool on my mouth like the first touch of fall,

Just as sweet as the mold beneath damp leaves.

.

I'd like to lie down there, in the puddles

Gathering beneath the massive oaks.

.

Maybe then I could taste the shimmer

Caught on your lips like promised rain.
