Drawn like a moth to the flame
Not too close, that flame can and will burn

Drawn like a moth to the flame
you waited in the darkness
and called me without sound,
a flame among the shadows
where lonely hearts are found.
i knew that i should leave you,
i knew you brought me pain,
but still my wings kept turning
and brought me back again.
you shone like something holy,
you burned like something wild,
and i became so helpless,
a foolish, trusting child.
each warning went unanswered,
each fear became a game,
for i was drawn towards you
like a moth unto the flame.
you singed my wings with kisses,
then watched me try to fly,
while all your empty promises
rose like smoke into the sky.
i fell among the ashes
and thought that love had won,
but wings can grow much stronger
when burning love is done.
now when i see you glowing,
i do not speak your name,
for i am not the same moth
who danced around your flame.
i carry my own lantern,
its light belongs to me,
and where your fire once held me
my wings are flying free.
