Drawing the Sun

A reflective poem

I saw the rays of the sun tonight

Like they'd been drawn by a child with crayon.

The sun was showing its belly

From behind a cloud:

Yolk-yellow apricot round heading down for the night.

A shaft reached up, white against grey-blue

And then another to its side on an angle

And then another opposite, the rays splitting the sky.

They backlit the cloud, its edge made silver-white bright.

I thought of how the sun can be drawn simply: a ball with rays.

I could imagine a small hand and an earnest expression

Etching this image on a page

And how it could be captured so easily

In the simplest of traps - with a crayon -

And how it would look just like this.

This golden hour, where beauty puts its face on,

Can make artists of us all.
