Don't Look Back

A poem finding hope in memory

I have been falling,

And falling,

And failing,

And falling,

Descending downwards with no destination in sight.

No net to catch me,

Just the air pushing me further,

And further,

And further,

Down.

They say don’t look back,

Look where you’re going,

Down there,

Into that abyss,

That nothingness,

That unknown.

Don’t look back,

Look at where you are.

Here.

Falling.

Into nothing.

Through the unknown.

Before you,

is darkness.

Besides you,

Is sadness.

Behind you.

You’re told not to look.

Don’t look back.

Says someone.

Says who?

It takes more effort, to look back.

You have to crane your neck,

Turn your gaze,

To see where you’ve come from,

What you’ve come through.

The falling,

But also the landing,

The leaping,

The laughing,

The loving,

The last time you felt like you would be falling forever,

You thought there was only darkness to come,

But you landed,

And there was light,

And love,

And laughter.

They say don’t look back.

The future is dark,

But the past has some light.

The future is unknown,

The past is known.
