Are hearts broken like ours when love dies?
Do Animals Feel Loss
He waits by the water, alone now.
The mate who ran beside him is gone.
The wind carries her scent, and it fades too fast.
The songbird stops singing.
Its partner is silent in the nest.
It stares at the empty branch,
its small chest trembling.
Does it remember, or just feel the empty ache?
The wolf howls into the dark,
a sound full of loss.
Its mate is nowhere to answer,
and I hear it in my own bones,
the same hollow pain,
the same silent tears.
Grief is not only ours.
It moves in fur and feather,
in eyes that glisten,
and hearts that break,
even if they cannot speak it.
