Peoples’ layers are complex,
Facades, they come and go
And even those who you deem close
You may not really know.
*
That coworker who always smiles,
And seems to have so many friends –
Dig deeper, and you may just find
She’s sad and lonely when work ends.
*
That friend who seems to have it all –
Vacations, showy house, and car,
He may be broke, swimming in debt,
You may be better off by far.
*
Peoples’ layers are complex,
Facades, they come and go
And even those who you deem close
You may not really know.
*
That neighbor who’s a major grump,
Who never gives a smile or wave,
Dig deeper, and you may just find
She can be witty, kind, and brave.
*
That homeless guy who begs for change,
Who wears the stinky, tattered clothes –
Dig deeper, and you may just find
That he had highs before the lows.
*
People’s layers are complex,
Facades, they come and go
Dig deeper, tales are treasures found,
So listen, and then you'll know.
