Diamonds Are Not Forever

The first day that we met,
We gelled together.
We were like glue,
Inseparable.

The engagement, the marriage,
Everything happened
Just beautifully.

The marriage lasted two years.
We were so in love.
Every night, I prayed
To the gods above,
“Thank you.”

The ring, the diamond, shone,
And I would sit and look at it,
Shining like the brightest star
Upon my hand.
And it belonged to me.

Then one day, out of the blue,
I realised he was pursuing someone new.

He’d been seen with her so many times,
And people would ring and tell me so.
But I didn’t want to believe it.
I didn’t want to know.

Then the final crunch came.

He said, “Sit down, we need to talk.”
I sat down on the bench
Because we’d gone out for a walk.

He said, “Can I have the ring back?
‘Cause today, I think we’re through.
I’ve found somebody else,
And she’s so much nicer than you.”

Okay, we’d had it bumpy.
We’d had it rough for a few months.
But nothing prepared me for this.
I didn’t even know
Anything was wrong in his kiss.

But the ring was there upon my hand,
And he got hold of my hand
And took it off.

Oh, dare he give her my ring?

There was no sadness in his eyes
As he walked off.

So, I managed to live without him.
I managed to live without my ring.

Because one thing is important,
And that’s that now he’s gone,
It’s better the truth is out in the open.

It’s better the ring is gone,
Because it would only give me memories
Every time I looked at it,
Memories that lingered on.

So goodbye, my dearest diamond.
Goodbye, my truest love.

The ring, it fit my finger,
But he didn’t fit me like a glove
