Dear Ms. Thunberg
A poem on climate change activism
Dear Ms. Thunberg,
A poem for you
And all that you do:
The power that we hold inside
Is sometimes more than we can hide.
Even when the passion for life that we have within,
Is dulled by out-of-date men and women.
You’re a superhero fighting bravely for us all,
Such a young girl, larger than life, yet so small.
Your Swedish braids are the cape you wear.
Your raised voice shows how much you care.
Watching you overcome the obstacles you’ve had,
Knowing you’ve faced powerful people, both good and bad.
Keep using your superpower to make things right
‘Do not go gentle into that good night.’
When the world seems dark and the hope almost gone
Remember that you are not alone .
There are beacons of light who care and believe
In the science and facts that prove earth’s getting peeved.
So soar away from the darkness inside,
But know that you do not have to hide
When you’re feeling sad or just meh or blue,
Because you are you and that is true.
Don’t let the science scare you away
From enjoying and appreciating each day
We have on this earth we get
With all the wonderful people we’ve met.
We should treat Mother Nature like a lady,
Instead of a hooker who’s filthy and shady.
She needs love and care and thought from us
Not a raised hand and mouth quick to cuss.
The beauty of her shines through each dirty crack
And although it’s too late now to ever go back
To the untouched, resourceful utopia at the start
She still has a powerful, magnificent, majestic heart.
But we must act soon and we must act smart
Each and every one must play their significant part.
The inaction of greedy souls cannot rule the day
Otherwise there’ll literally be hell to pay.
So use your superpowers to call them out
Let them see we know what they’re all about.
Getting straight to the heart of things is what you do.
You make sure they know the impact on you.
Of all the initiatives for climate change out there,
You and your group are making people aware.
Choices we make now will have an impact later on,
But saying something while doing nothing is the biggest political con.
So giving up your dreams of an education
To make a point about this at various stations
Has raised eyebrows from around the world
As your plans and speeches have slowly unfurled.
As people are starting to listen and act
It is time to show that we are not trapped
Into the status quo that conservation has become
But we can make a difference, each and everyone.
We must steal back our childhood and dreams.
Enjoy and protect the sun’s shining beams.
We must put meaning into empty words
In order to have a chance at saving this earth.
So scream, “How dare you!” while they look away.
Cry out, “How dare you!” when you have to pay
For the ignorance they choose to welcome and embrace,
And the greediness that’s taken common sense’s place.
Hold up your shield against many a villainous attack.
Toughen your skin against bullies who would hold you back.
Keep your wits sharp and your facts close and fast.
But be gentle and sweet when you can, in contrast.
Changes must happen in how we live.
People must sacrifice certain things they have.
Priorities must shift for the future to see hope
Otherwise our planet won’t be able to cope.
But this you know and this you share
With people from here and everywhere
Globally powerful people to small-town folks
All of whom you’re trying to give hope.
Maintain the intensity of your mission
So that there will be future generations
Who act with more sense and accountability
Than the ones that we’ve had recently.
Thank you for reading!
With gratitude and support,
Valerie Jean
