Cutting Out The Devil

Making him a nothing

Cutting Out The Devil

I stood in the dark,

Hearing him breathe,

That quiet taunt

Coiled in the air.

His words were poison,

Sweet in the start,

Burning later,

Buried deep in the heart.

I felt his pull,

That twisted charm,

A promise of love

Tied tight with harm.

I knew the truth,

Though it scared me,

His touch was smoke,

Curling around my soul.

I took my courage,

Held it firm,

Ready to slice him

Out of my life.

The night watched me,

Holding its breath,

As I cut the ties

That kept me weak.

Pain came first,

Sharp and wild,

Then calm thinned in,

Smooth as rain.

The devil faded,

Losing his grip,

His shadow shrinking

Back to nothing.

I walked away clean,

Free in my steps,

Knowing I had won

My quiet war.
