a joke before departure

At the boarding gate, colossal windows display

giant cocoons of steel, as we sit for the time to tick

an antiseptic air, red and brown carpeting.

The sketchpad in your hands: Your life

doodling around problems. You ask,

"Can this ink be erased once it's written?"

fears of never managing immigrant expectations

an anxious mind: fight or flight?

we struggled to leave behind

high cortisol and other permanent markers...

-

After landing I said,

"I will take care of you from now."

You laughed.

You said you liked men who could make you laugh.

I replied,

"then I'll always be the best joke you ever heard."
