Curtail the Cats

Abcedarian Poem

An understanding, some cooperation would

be nice to hear from those

cat owners who open the

door for their

errant, exhuberant

felines to roam and

gouge birds that are

hovering in the bushes and

inching toward some seeds; their cute, loving felines

jumping to swat down the ruby-crowned

kinglet, so tiny and vibrant.

Lazy owners let them out,

making it hard for bird lovers to enjoy seeing the

nuthatches dart in for a seed

or two.

Problems are created by wandering felines - a

quandary for wildlife; these lovely pets are

rampant killers, one billion songbirds killed by our

stealthy domesticated hunters who are safer indoors.

Think about that for a moment!

Under your roof that will keep them warm,

vile, cruel acts won’t touch them;

wiley coyotes or mean dogs won’t kill them.

X-out their wandering escapades; I implore you to keep them safe.

Your cat can play indoors and have a full life,

zeroing their killing effect.

**

I love cats and have been a cat owner my entire life. I have fostered medically fragile cats. My cats had a fabulous fun indoor life, allowing me to enjoy their personalities up close and also enjoy tiny wildlife in my yard without having mauled or dead "presents" brought to me. The birds have a very hard life with many predators beside domesticated cats. I hope you enjoy this poem and help the songbirds by keeping your cat indoors.

    Great poem

They would also then not poo in my borders. Cat poo when digging to plant things is NOT a pleasant surprise! But you know, it's a tricky one, this. I know when I lived in Calgary, I think it might have been a by-law that your cats needed to be kept indoors because of predators. I don't like cats eating birds either.

I have cared for many wild songbirds who were victims of a cat attack and have yet over 20 years to see one make it. Of a cat owner who lets the pet roam outside could hold a dying chickadee cat attack victim perhaps the loss of a precious being would change that habit. I lost a cat long ago to a dog attack because I stupidly let her out for an hour. Cats do not have to roam outside to be happy. Also there are low cost cat houses people can use to give their cats an outdoor experience without being a very deadly threat to birds that already have a hard road to survival.

  • This was some solid advice to cat owners. Love that you did it in the form of an Abecedarian!

  • Good parents keep their children safe and domesticated pets are reliant on their human “parents.” Wild animals belong in the wild. End captivity and if you desire a household pet do your research and be kind to all involved.

Animals are made to roam free, it is actually the circle of life, out in the wild there are predators and prey. Survival of the fittest. Kitty cats are just doing what instinct tells them to do.

Agree. Cats are safer indoors! I can’t believe how many songbirds are killed each year by them.

Yes upset with cat owners who let there cats run wild thru our neighborhood! And let the birds be free!
