Just arrived?
Welcome to our planet
Let me introduce you
To our most enduring habit.
Earth is less than sublime
Most abhor the daily grind.
No love, no smile, not even a hug
Until our hands are wrapped around a mug.
Humans scan the planet far and wide
No single bean can ever hide
From the process that we’ve refined
Harvest, roast, and finally grind.
Blonde to bold, mere words cannot express
Sipped through our lips is the ultimate test.
Some find it bitter on the tongue from the cup
Even if it were to spill, we would lap it up.
It is probably best described as addiction
Any denial of the brew would bring sedition
Add Sugar, cream, and flavors like toffee
Many prefer to just drink the black coffee.
Shops selling lattes, espressos, iced on every corner
The combinations are endless as to what people order
Some stay for hours others stay shorter
Paying high prices implies sanction to loiter.
I crave liquid gold as much as any other on this planet
I don’t have the funds to spruce it up or expand it.
I am satisfied to drink mine black with no extra components
Scoop from a jar, pour on hot water to the disdain of my opponents.
Coffee represents all we value in our lives
Cherished no matter where we reside.
About the only thing on Earth not in confusion
The drinking of coffee is what makes us human.

Good job.
Great writing Mindy. A cup of hot, strong dark coffee sure makes me more human!
