October is a house at the end of a road
that wasn't there in September.

Two pumpkins uncarved on the porch.
A light on for no one.
Curtains closed all day.

I suggest Matt enter with me.
A little seasonal arrangement.
A temporary haunting.

Stay through New Year's, I say.
Then my February birthday.
My practical plan
until I become
someone’s final girl.

We host a Halloween party
where everyone is something
they're not:
ghosts, witches, fairies,
women who look unlonely.

We let the house mistake us for lovers.

In the morning,
we notice the cracks in the foundation,
the warped floorboards,
black mold.

We tell each other it can all be repaired.

The trick is not to believe it.
The trick is to survive.
