the crows scatter in formation, their wings
~ blacker than the moonless sky ~
disappear into the dark thicket of woods
a discheveled pile of leaves, brown
strewn across the trail,
the only evidence of their presence at all
my ears prick up ~ I listen
for what should scare the crows that
~ shouldn’t ~ or wouldn’t ~
scare me?
