Creeping Edge

Darkness slithering slowly at the maw

Unnatural creatures eagerly await with empty buckets

The early warmth births frigid winds

Undressing weary observers… slowly with each step

Crisps beneath the feet akin to glass shattering

Getting louder… and then quieter and wet

Protection… I need protection

Many layers atop my shivering shoulders

I still feel the danger sneaking

The lamp’s fuel lasts fewer hours. Darkness now slithers faster

Observers now resemble old crones… out stretched hands seeking flesh and bone

The layers upon layers of armour are but futile

Danger is here. The edge is frosted over

I try to step back but my feet don’t budge

My head fixed forward as if a bust

Monsters are creeping closer

With sacks and buckets demanding tribute

Must I abide to survive the edge unscathed?

Must I abide to quell their vengeful rage?

Beyond the guardians I see moist and cold

And beyond that I see the whitest glow

Is that safety?
