Counterfeit Comfort

(you + me)

By Katelyn HuntPublished 5 months ago 1 min read

You.

Your eyes reflected

The rolling hills

Of our promised future.

Your smile was

My abode,

My comfort.

Your touch rendered

Me defenseless,

Casting a spell

Over my senses.

But the comfort you once gave me

Dissipates swifter than any fog.

Your eyes,

Once filled with

Fabricated emotion,

Are cold and unfeeling.

Your promises

Once whispered

Soul to soul,

Are lost

In the echoes

Of my tears.

The touch

I mistook

For love

Renders me a fool.

Me.

Alone

In the confinement

Of my room.

My mind wanders.

My heart withers.

I am drowning,

Lost in the space between,

Yearning for a comfort

That never existed.

Except that it did;

I had been looking

In the wrong place.

True comfort and peace

Burns from within

My soul.

Like a hearth,

It required tending,

But with time,

It burns brighter

Than any bonfire.

The counterfeit comfort you gave me

Is gone,

Replaced with

Fortitude,

Perseverance,

Self-love,

Faith,

And inner solace.

My comfort

Is fueled

By your absence.
