Comfort me...

An ode to a mother's love.

From the moment you were born I knew

You would need me, for everything.

We were like one being

Eating, sleeping, crying together.

You needed the warmth of my body to sleep

your tiny hand resting on my chest.

Watching you breathe became my life

Watching you become a little person

One of a kind. A brand new human being.

Your First smiles, first words, first steps,

My everything.

As you grew it became clear

I needed you more than you needed me.

As you want my comfort less,

I need yours more.

Every hug savoured,

Because it may be the last time you do it

without a groan.

Every time I can bring you back from tears

with my words, a kiss, a cuddle

precious.

I want to be your comfort forever,

but I know this too shall pass,

just like those sleepless nights

and endless days.

Someday soon you won’t need me at all.

But then I remember

the warmth of my mother’s arms

that can still make everything stop

Bring me comfort, calm, stillness

Stop the tears.

And I know I’ll always be home to you,

just like she is to me.
