Collect Call from Heaven

I was all alone,

Sitting by the phone.

A drink in my hand.

Thoughts sinking like quicksand.

When I thought I heard an Angel sing.

All of a sudden, the phone began to ring.

The operator said, “Hello, you have a collect call from Heaven. Do you accept the charges?”

I may not know which way I’m going,

But I know where my heart is.

Instantly, I knew it had to be my late wife.

There’s no quarters for pay phones in the afterlife.

So I said yes, and we were connected.

A small piece of my soul was injected

Back into me. Finally I was whole again.

We talked for a while, and then…

Just like that she was gone.

All I could hear was dial tone.

But I’ll never forget the sound of her voice.

And I think that I probably made the right choice,

When the operator said,

“Hello, you have a collect call from Heaven. Do you accept the charges?”

I wonder about the end, and about how large is

The space that our spirits go when we pass away.

And if this was her only way to say,

“Don’t worry! We’ll be together again someday.

And if you want to call me back, all you have to do is pray.”

Oh yeah, a collect call from Heaven.

It was a collect call from Heaven.
