Cause Of Death, Stingray

It was fast and sad

Cause Of Death, Stingray

The shore lay quiet with a promise it did not keep,

Water clear enough to quiet any rising doubt,

A place where feet could wander without thought,

Trust given easily to what appeared so still.

Each step pressed gently into shifting sand below,

Nothing stirred to warn of what lay hidden there,

The calm held firm, offering no hint of change,

No sign that danger rested in such a fragile space.

The moment came without a shape to recognise,

A sudden force delivered without hesitation,

Pain sharp enough to silence every other sense,

A strike that left no time to understand.

There was no fury in what had caused the wound,

No creature rising with intent to claim a life,

Only defence drawn swiftly from a place unseen,

A line crossed unknowingly, paid for in full.

The water did not darken as the breath grew thin,

No storm arrived to carry away the truth,

Everything remained as calm as it had been before,

While something vital quietly slipped away.

Voices reached too late to alter what had begun,

Hands moved with urgency that could not repair,

The smallest break had carried the deepest cost,

Leaving nothing that could be undone or reversed.

Stillness came in a way that felt almost gentle,

A fading rather than a fight against the end,

One final breath taken without return,

In a place that never seemed capable of harm.
