Candles Burn

Like matches don’t play with them

Candles Burn

Candles burn if you play with them

just like matches do

flames do not care for reason

they only know how to take

She lit one for the mood

watched wax run like slow honey

shadows moving on the walls

heat curling the air above

It was easy to lean closer

to see the glow touch her skin

the room breathing with the fire

soft and dangerous at once

She thought of all the things

that start small and end wild

a spark in the corner of the eye

a word spoken without care

Candles burn if you play with them

and so do people

you think you can hold the heat

until it slips from your hands

She had seen curtains catch

in a breathless instant

flame racing upward

too quick to stop

had smelled the sharp bite of smoke

heard the frantic crack of glass

A candle is gentle until it isn’t

its warmth turning to hunger

its glow to a blinding roar

it will take the air from your lungs

and leave only black in its wake

Candles burn if you play with them

just like matches do

and nothing you love will last

once the fire has found it
