At school I knew
your face,
those eyes,
your name.
I did not know
I would one day call for
you from another room.
Between then and now,
there are mornings we never made:
Your hand finding mine before the alarm,
a kettle boiling,
preparing for the day
we’ll return from
together
this time.
I do long for the days we never had.
How strange, to feel the absence
of something
that never happened.
Something we both long for.
And in that longing,
we find more of us.
Still, sometimes,
I want to turn back twenty years
and write your name
beside mine.
From the next room,
you ask if I want a cuppa.
I say yes.
Our souls
weren’t quite ready.
Our time
wasn’t quite then.
It is now.
We have us,
now.
But can we
make up for the wait
with forever?
