But He Turned Into A Snake

But He Turned Into A Snake

I wrote his every detail,
Beside a candle flame,
Then asked the listening universe
To send the man I named.

I asked for eyes like midnight,
A voice as warm as June,
A man who’d hold my secrets
Beneath a faithful moon.

I wanted charm and laughter,
Strong hands to keep me safe,
But never thought to mention
The heart behind the face.

He came upon a Tuesday,
With roses wet from rain,
And every word he whispered
Made music from my pain.

His smile slid through my doorway
Before his feet walked in,
I never saw the tiny scales
That shimmered on his skin.

He kissed me like a promise
And spoke of destiny,
Then slowly wound his sweetness
Around the whole of me.

Each night he shed a story
And grew another lie,
His words were drops of poison
Disguised as butterflies.

He watched me through cold silence,
His eyes no longer kind,
He twisted every question,
Then curled around my mind.

Then moonlight caught him sleeping
And stripped away the fake,
The man I’d manifested
Had turned into a snake.

His tongue split every promise,
His eyes turned hard and small,
And all the love he offered
Was never love at all.

I opened up the window
And sent him through the night,
He slithered past the candle
And vanished out of sight.

I burnt the list I’d written
And watched the false wish break,
A man can look like heaven
And still become a snake.
