Burned by the Match You Lit

A fire to kill a love to die

Burned by the Match You Lit

You struck the match with careful hands,

Like someone drawing final plans,

The flame reflected in your eyes,

Beautiful enough to ruin lives.

I let you close enough to stay,

Believing love could heal decay,

But fire was hidden in your kiss,

A slow destruction wrapped in bliss.

The smoke climbed softly through the room,

Carrying the scent of doom,

While shadows stretched along the floor,

Like ghosts outside a closing door.

You burned through every word I wrote,

Every prayer caught in my throat,

Turning tender things to ash,

With every touch and every flash.

Still I loved you through the pain,

Through every scar and acid rain,

Because broken hearts become addicted,

To the very hands that left them twisted.

Now the walls are black with grief,

And every memory feels brief,

The fire died but left behind,

A cemetery in my mind.

I hear your voice in every spark,

A whisper crawling through the dark,

Reminding me of what you knew,

That flames consume what they cling to.

So I stand among the smoke alone,

A body colder than stone,

Burned by the match you chose to light,

Still searching for you every night.
