The storm blew me away
while you looked away,
too concerned with the pirates that wanted your gold.
You fought and fought,
forgetting how the rope could not hold—
hopeless against the tide.
It pushed and pushed against my sides.
Your only ride off that island—
I couldn’t leave.
A mere boat,
the waves made me heave.
But I fought back.
I did.
Clung on to the reeds and weeds.
Apart and apart we drifted.
Memories sifted—
but still,
I drifted.
I saw you run for me,
clothes ripping off you as you ran,
then crumble to the sand
and cry for me.
I saw fire in your eyes
that even the tears could not extinguish.
You pulled savagely on your hair
to ease the anguish.
Our fates were sealed.
Our dreams withheld.
Our fortunes revealed.
But you would not give up.
You took the dive for it,
attempted to swim for it.
But the oceans devoured you,
overwhelmed you—
until I saw you back on the shore,
vomiting,
then crying out for me,
more and more.
