Blood Apart

By Julie O'Hara - Author, Poet and Spiritual WarriorPublished 5 months ago 2 min read

(Verse 1)

The truth arrives like a winter guest, before the bed is made

The knot is tied too tightly now, beneath the heavy shade

Where things are misaligned, my love, the shadows never lie

A distance grows in silence, long before the first goodbye

And the blood is pulled asunder by a line that will not die.

(Verse 2)

I spent my strength on mismatched things, a beggar in the rain

In patterns where the purpose died, but I embraced the chain

I wore a suit of duty that was never cut for me

And closeness turned to ashes every time I refused to flee

For the blood was pulled asunder, but I was slow to see.

(Chorus)

For the path is only lighted by the ones who walk in time

The soul is quick to hunger when the field is stripped of lime

The curriculum is shifted when a holy truth is bared

And the work is given shape by the lives that aren't ensnared

By the blood that’s pulled asunder from the ones who never cared.

(Verse 3)

Then others come with voices like a song I’ve always known

They settle in the spirit like a seed that’s rightly sown

No introduction needed for the recognition’s sake

The shared direction rises like a swan upon the lake

And the soul is found in family where the heart no longer aches.

(Verse 4)

But some arrive with jarring notes, a current out of phase

Their rhythm moves in circles through a different kind of maze

The lesson flares a moment, then it flickers and is gone

Nothing holds us captive in the grey before the dawn

With the blood still pulled asunder, and the boundary line is drawn.

(Bridge)

There is no judgment in the rift, no malice in the break

When energy diverges, there is nothing left to take

The purpose holds its steady hand when I respect the wall

The soul must build its chapel where the shadows cannot fall

And the blood is pulled asunder—the clearest truth of all.

(Final Chorus)

Oh, the path is only lighted by the ones who walk in time

The soul is quick to hunger when the field is stripped of lime

The curriculum is shifted when a holy truth is bared

And the work is given shape by the lives that aren't ensnared

By the blood that’s pulled asunder... toward the kin for whom I’ve cared.
