Bleeding Heart
How do you protect a heart you wear on your sleeve?
To say, “I love you”
Seems easy.
The words
Flow quicker
Once released.
Chasing acquaintances
Of little interest,
Until you notice,
You love more people
Less.
When you wanted
To love fewer people
More.
Vacant heart chambers jostle
Hollow words with fickle rhythms
Beating into an un-seeable future
Filled with ripping anxiety,
Tearing words, and bruises
Formed from one to many risks.
Too many “love you” ‘s
That were ignored.
The mind cannot force
The heart to stop its palpitations.
Doing its best to
Minimize the damage.
Encasing everything in glass
To be seen,
But never touched.
The heart does as it pleases,
Beating fast.
Shattering the glass,
It inflicts its own injuries.
Not realizing
It’s bleeding.
Relentless in its
Desire to love.
Perhaps it’s better
To hoard those
“I Love You’s.”
I’ve already suffered
Too much blood loss.

I'm a young arts professional who is finally sharing some of the poetry and prose I've written while working through grief and self reflection. Sometimes poetry is the easiest form to translate neurodivergent nuances. Why not use it?
