That moment when you stop fearing destruction

It’s raining ash and ember

I try not to remember

The curvature of the land

Being eaten up by flames

The fire is taking out

The road to your house

And even as it approaches

This is the safest I’ve felt in years

They say it hasn’t been contained

The smoke encroaches on

The few things in this world that are mine

Threatening to wrap its tendrils

Around my throat

And squeeze until I learn to let go

I can feel the heat licking my neck

I’m unafraid

Only surrender brings restoration

So I lie down

And close my eyes

And wait
