As I walked today each step left prints
On the dusty road,
Marks of my existence
Until the rains come to blur the evidence
My finger touched a dandelion top
Detaching tiny seeds,
Individual parachutes bore life
To new worlds on an invisible breeze
My eyes saw a heart shaped rock
Love laid amid dried tears and
Earth’s crusted skin
A symbol of strength left behind
Flowing water unhurried, unworried
Ate the earth in large mouthfuls
Moved and polished boulders
Wreaking havoc among exquisiteness
Pine soldiers guarded the emptiness
Swarming life unseen, unheard
An omniscient presence watched
The limbs respectfully saluted then halted
A red breasted bird bit and pecked,
Rifling for grubs, investigating
My intrusion they ignored
Since I issued no threat or value
A hawk’s deep dive cautioned my approach
A whitetail vaulted over a fallen tree
Birds silenced and squirrels scolded
All recognized and labeled me a trespasser
As I walked today, I joined the inhabitants
Neither the forest’s friend nor foe
Disconnected and disguised
In a world living parallel to my days and my nights
