Beach Day

A poem

Beach Day

I love the beach I can’t wait to return they exclaim

I frown

Nothings wrong I say

It’s just that

My love for them was beach

A beach on the West coast as a matter of fact.

Where warmth increases as the day goes by

We both start off on the sand

Where our future is in the infinite number of grains of sand

As the heat warms our bodies we go into the cool water

There is some resistance - the waves are strong but we push back

I get knocked down a few times but they help me up

They get me back on my feet every time

We are treading water now

I swim deeper, past the pier but they are no longer close, they stay behind and watch me float

I hear the sounds of the beach - laughter, waves crashing on the shore, squeals of joy as distant as the other side of the ocean

I drift deeper

There are hundreds of creatures swimming below me

As the depth increases the mystery of sea life intensifies

My feelings for them are as unique as these animals

My emotions are as deep as the depths below me, deeper even

I am the salt and they are the sea

They cannot separate from me

As I swim back I motion for them to go towards the shore and they do

They push past the waves a minute before I do and stumble onto their feet

At some point I tussle with the waves again

They know I am going to win the battle

They watch me smiling, ready to help if I’m i get into trouble

In a matter of seconds I am on my feet and we settle into the sand

The best part of the West Coast beach

Is when the sea swallows the sun whole

As we watch together

That was almost five years ago

I have moved far away from the beach

The further I traveled the easier it seemed to forget

But they live at the beach

they never left

I am the salt they are the sea

I can exist on my own

They cannot separate from me

I don’t know if I will ever return

But the memory will never truly fade

For I am the salt I come from the sea
