At Last, I’m Free

The bad years are all behind me I am free at last

At Last, I’m Free

The cork went pop,
The bubbles flowed,
The champagne filled the glass.
And here was I, at a party
On New Year’s Eve,
With oh, such class!

I really felt like someone
In my beautiful long dress and pearls.
And me, I just looked normal,
Like any of the other girls.

But if only they knew
What I’d been through
Over the past fifteen, twenty years,
And how I learned to put a smile on
And hide every one of my tears.

All the courage,
All the expectations of life,
All left me
Like a ship marooned
On higher ground.

No matter how I tried to move on,
I couldn’t really find anything
But sinking ground.

And then I decided,
Enough, enough!
It’s time now to think of me.
I need to get back to being free
And out in society.

So a friend invited me to this ball,
And here I am,
Painted lips and smile and all.

And the music’s playing,
The champagne’s flowing,
And I am out and free.

I am out,
And at last,
I’m free.
