I wonder if he recognizes anything here, she almost said out loud but stopped herself.
The look he had on his face was all she needed to know that he did.
Coming back to this place; which was now entirely her space, was his idea.
An idea which surprised her.
She wasn't too sure how he would react or if she was even comfortable with the whole idea.
In spite of all that, she satisfied his curiosity and accommodated his wishes and returned home with him.
And now being able to see the tiny space they once shared illuminated in his eyes was enough to send her over the edge.
"I still have a box of your stuff over here," she said nervously handing him a box.
He gently took the box and set it on the floor.
They both sighed deeply.
Looking around at all of her artwork that now encompassed the entire ceiling he smiled.
"After you left I had a lot of time on my hands, well...you know during the lockdown. A lot of time alone I meant." She felt the need to explain.
"It's cool," he said. "It looks really cool."
Their eyes met and they exchanged smiles.
She continued to look around gathering the last of his belongings he had left behind.
He sat on the edge of the bed they once shared.
She didn't know what to say.
She thought for sure she would never see him again or be with him here in this room again.
The last time they were together here they made love until it was time for him to leave.
And even then she didn't want to let him go.
Thinking back for a moment; she remembers running outside after him to try to get him to stay but was only able to see his tail lights from a distance.
"I was too late," she mumbled.
"What?" He asked.
"Nothing, nevermind," she said handing him the bag.
"That should be everything."
They sat in silence for a long time until the silence became too loud.
He stood up getting ready to leave and he could see she was trembling.
It took everything for her to not to crumble into pieces right there at his feet.
But she knew that would only push him further away.
He knows he was wrong to stay away so long; he told her so.
He knows she had been waiting this whole time for him to come home.
But none of it mattered now because even if they both wanted things to be different they both knew that it never would be.
It was too late
"I'm so so very sorry," they both said at the same time.
Tears welled in their eyes.
Both of them hurting for all the things that had gone wrong.
Trying desperately to be strong for one another but yet both feeling so very weak.
A strand of her hair fell down on to her cheek and he pushed it back over her ear.
He took her in his arms and whispered in her ear that he would always love her.
She settled her face in the crook of his neck; it was a place he called her place, and she began to cry.
He rocked her back and forth soothing her.
Meanwhile, his heart was breaking into a million pieces.
"No one will ever take your place. Do you hear me?" He whispered.
"I'll never love anyone like I love you," he said.
She looked up into the eyes of the man she loved for more than a decade and she knew that the fairytale was coming to an end.
She saw an adoration and an eternal love; one that will never come close to comparing to any other.
She saw years and years of a struggle that they both never really over came.
Instead they just now struggled alone.
"You know anything can happen right?" He asked her looking into her eyes.
She nodded, pulling herself away and wiping the last of her tears, "yeah, baby I know. I know anything can happen."
