Another Solstice

Another Party to Appreciate the Darkness

Ukulele strumming. A flower chain around my neck.

Satyrs dancing together. They wear flannel.

Does the dew stick to their horns? Do they

like the way the leaves crunch under their hooves?

I'm just sitting here on my tree stump,

thinking of heroic couplets and love

letters. Those eloquent lines hanging

out a pretty mouth.

We couldn't surrender to the night.

We couldn't surrender to the cold.

We kept playing our songs. We kept

dancing under the moonlight. We warmed

ourselves with cider and tea.

I might have a crush on a bearded satyr.

His eyes behind silver spectacles.

He'd look cute with a pocket watch

and matching cufflinks.

Another few strums of the ukulele. My friends

playing bells, drums, and vibraphones.

A soiree in the forest. Another solstice,

another party to appreciate the darkness.

Hold my hand, and let's head

into the thick of it. Hold my hand,

and let's chase after the moon.

The sun wants to hide and sleep.

The moon wants to guide and creep.
