A new week,
predawn dew clings to rented walls
+
warm comforter, sweat [ ] sticky pink pajama dress
a light switch

on

+
strong patchouli fills [ ] pebble sized nostrils
sharp short hairs scrape [ ] chubby cheeks
big arms stretch from above
down, under, around
+
"Keep sleeping, baby."
+
(surrender)
(like always)
(it's natural)
+
right hand rests on [ ] forehead
guitar plucking nails grazing [ ] inch-long eyebrows
right hand, big enough to cover [ ] entire face
+
(big enough)
(to choke single-handedly)
+
cold leather-covered arms
—zipper latches onto [ ] ear
narrowly misses [ ] tiny hoop earring
drags cartilage roughly—
presses [ ] on soft cotton-covered chest
+
+
light leaks through [ ] weakly shut eyes
vision drowned warm pink
fluttering in feigned sleep
[ ] trembling pink pajamas
+
(can’t sleep like this)
+
comfort—gone
no bearings, suddenly just
+
[ ]
strong arms
warm chest
+
boot heels hit short-haired carpet
cross a threshold
(go to sleep)
(go to sleep)
+
hallway lights shine all hours
+
[ ]
lifted
laid and left
shifted
by arms that lack hesitance
+
pink pajamas
a soft pillow,
hard plastic,
cold comforter,
+
(do not flinch)
+
the storage cart, a makeshift bed
moving [ ] with ease
two tiers
+
bottom: hello kitty backpack, plastic bag stuffed with noseblood-soiled clothes, camera and computer bag, extra sneakers, two jackets—one large and one small.
top: half-filled coffee mug, pillow, small socks, white down comforter, sheep plushie, one sleeping [ ] .
+
loose wheels wobble past the crack between carpet and elevator
a mechanic hum
four floors
+
+
slows to a stop, bumps the ground
once, twice
a mechanic shhhhh
(should be sleeping)
+
flourescent darkness
frigid air scented
rubber and gasoline
+
car key beeps
a closed door
*click*
open
+
[ ]
lifted again
left
+
[ ] swaddled in once-cold comforter
the seat buckle digs into
shoulder and hip
beige leather backseat, a makeshift bed
+
+
[ ] clutch plushie
[ ] sigh silently
[ ] keep eyes closed
+
the weekend is over
(surrender)
a new week is beginning
(like always)
again
