An Unfinished Life
Out Of Order
before he left, he handed me a pen
and I asked him, what is this for
he smiled as our eyes met
then his gaze turned towards the door
see, today I learned the hard way
that nothing’s ever what it seems
and sometimes what people say
are just words caught in between
it all started as they will
a friend of a friend and a party
not much in common, but still
the need to connect with somebody
fills a void and sets blinders
till it all settles into something
a familiar reminder
the sometimes, seeing is believing
but for me it was nothing
another hard knock life lesson
seasonal company
disguised as expression
building a life founded on dreams
and what they sell in the movies
followed by promises they can’t keep
that keeps a soul moving
so what he handed to me
cut much deeper than a knife
the pen he handed was to complete
my unfinished life
I held on to that pen
and I pondered the ending
and I’ll make my way when
I finally stop pretending
