Nicole was past her limit when she came home from school. After three presentations, one of which she totally botched, she was ready to unplug her mind and drift into absolute bliss. As soon as she got home, she escaped to her room. She traded her backpack for a pair of headphones before climbing up on her bed. The headphones gently covered her ears in a tight embrace as Florence Welch serenaded the overstimulated student.

A few sprays of floral perfume kissed Nicole's neck and wrists as she tapped on the bottle. Slowly and gently, she lowered her stressed head onto her pillow and let her body sink into the bed. After another minute into the song, she drew her wrists up to her nostrils and inhaled as much as she could. With her eyelids shutting like windows, the fragrance drifted her off into a dreamworld.

Even with her eyes close, Nicole could see a garden grow around her. Gardenias, irises, and orchids grew over her head, shielding her eyes from the gleams of her daydreams. Leaves gently tickled her elbows as she pictured a robin flying overhead. Somewhere in the distance, she could hear a thumping sound. Instead of taking it seriously, she continued to take everything in. This was her paradise, and nothing could-

"Nicole! Honey, are you in there?"

Nicole's mother was outside the door, ruining the amorunus moment with her relentless tapping.

This was such sensual writing. I could smell the flowers, hear Florence + the Machine, feel the caress of leaves. Just as I was surrendering to relaxation, Nicole’s mom disturbed her and me. I love the word and the photograph. 🤍

A little bit of an Angela Carter feel with this one. And a well-deserved Top Story!

  • Lol, she really needs a do not disturb sign. Loved this. Congratulations on your Top Story!
