Acolyte of Pain

With knowledge comes suffering

After the reprieve where painful memories seep from my veins,

I sink into my corner to reflect.

I am not meant for greatness nor for an easy life,

I am put on this Earth to uncover the mysteries,

Some see the world as a place of fun,

Others a brief comfort,

But I will not like carpe diem seize each day,

With sunshine I will not miss the rain,

With hardship I will after still feel pain.

I was born to suffer with a mind that never rests,

Yet I will reap the rewards of knowledge and wisdom.

For me the world is cryptic and I must uncover its secrets.

Of course there are times of relief,

Parades of comfort because otherwise I would let up.

Sailing against the wind more often than not,

Refusing to lie at anchor yet sometimes

Erupting in flames and left to burn in the dusk.

Yet I will always rise from the ashes.

Few would choose this life as they would feel the weight of burden,

But like Simon from Lord of the Flies,

Our ancient philosopher Socrates,

Father of tragedy Aeschylus,

I must accept this responsibility.

For I am on the road less trodden,

Where the water mirrors a face of deep thought

Of a mind full of intrusion and reflection.

Because with suffering comes wisdom,

And he who learns must suffer,

Even in sleep yet more so while awake.

The skies may be blue,

Yet this is a fallacy in me,

For I must continue to push on,

Remember the unbearability of battle from my past,

Avoid the banal ignorant ones who see not behind the mask,

For there are always two sides to a coin.

I accept this role as an acolyte for pain,

A role I would not pass for any other,

For my thirst for knowledge is too strong.
