A Tree Is More Than Just a Tree

A tree is more than just a tree
There’s so much more for us to see
Within its trunk the rings unfold
A story of the years untold

Each ring reveals another year
Of sunshine, storms and things held dear
Of times of drought and days of rain
Of seasons that won’t come again

A tree can tell of disease
Of changing weather and gentle breeze
Its memories hidden deep inside
Like secrets that the years can’t hide

And like a spirit within the tree
It holds its memories like you and me
From lovers’ names carved in its bark
To birds that shelter after dark

Its leaves blow softly in the breeze
Then autumn brings them to their knees
They fall and settle on the ground
To feed new life that gathers round

Each branch a direction of things it knows
Each year another story grows
While caterpillars climb its trunk
A tree is more than we’ve ever thunk

And even when its growing ends
Its wood becomes our household friends
A cupboard door, a table or chair
A little of that tree is everywhere

Cause lots of things can be made from that tree
From a cupboard door to a tray for carrying your tea
So never walk past and underestimate this tree
