A Stubborn, Pushy Man
One step at a time,
Rome wasn’t built in one day,
The pyramids wasn’t built in a night,
So why are you fighting for our love
To suddenly have everything right?
It’s early days, it’s early days,
We shouldn’t need to prove,
Just slow it down a little bit,
And be conscious of your move.
You’re trying to push me over the edge,
To something that I don’t know,
When all I want to do is sit here,
Get to know you, and watch the falling snow.
So let’s just take it steady,
Like everybody else,
There’s no need to rush me forward,
Let our feelings speak for themselves.
Don’t be pulling that funny face,
Pretending to be hurt or confused,
I’m not going forward to a broken heart,
Where I’ll come out battered and bruised.
I’ve walked those roads before, you know,
I know where rushing can lead,
Love isn’t something you push and shove,
Or something you beg me to need.
Give me room to breathe a while,
Give me time to understand,
You might get further walking beside me
Than being a stubborn, pushy man.
I’m not saying there’ll never be love,
I’m not saying there never can,
But you’ll never hurry my heart along
Just because you think you can.
So for now, we go at my pace,
One step at a time,
Who knows at the end of it,
You will or you won’t be mine.
If you push me over the edge, boy,
One thing I’ll do is walk,
And then you’ll be sat there wishing
We’d never had this talk.
