It had been one of those days.
Overcast and gloomy much like my mood.
Nothing seemed to be going right...
my perspective negatively skewed.
But as I hurried down 7th Avenue,
a little magic came my way.
Not in dollars or a genie's lamp.
No, something simpler chased my moody gray.
All along the City streets
thousands of people hustle by
but for one blinding moment
that little bit of magic caught my eye.
Just a little gesture,
nothing grand, just small and sweet.
A simple little gift
from a stranger walking down the street.
Not a sorceress or a witch
but her spell lasted quite a while.
For my day had been all doom and gloom
until it was warmly met with a smile.
No introductions or how do you do's.
just a smirk and a glint in the eyes.
So small, so fast but needed still
that smile made a grown man cry.
The power that that one smile had
sent my melancholy away
a simple smile, a sincere gift
had changed the outlook of my day.
I haven't seen the smiling stranger
since she erased away my blues.
But every time I'm feeling bad
I think her to be my muse.
If everyone could experience
the joy her passing smile could bring
the more we might come to rely
on the joy of the little things.
See a smile, give a smile
its a gift we all can share.
For we'll never know how our smiles glow
can magically heal and repair.
Heal A broken or a lonely heart.
Or a day had all gone wrong.
You could even be saving a life
or make someone feel that they belong.
So keep an ample supply of smiles
in your everyday inventory.
Such a little thing can have a huge impact
on a person's whole life story.
