A Sense of Self

Sensory

A poem can feel as shocking as reaching for a door handle.

And as comforting as a sweater.

Make us turn up our nose in disgust

Like smelling rotten leftovers

Or the sweet scent of spring morning dew

It can leave us with a bad taste in our mouth like spoiled sour milk

Or something as tasteful as an apple

Its words can be as abrasive as metal across a chalkboard

On the other hand relaxing like the song of birds

The reflection of a rough time staring back at us

Or the dream of what we desire presenting itself to us

Poems are like us

Able to be

Shocking or comforting

Rotten or sweet

Sour or tasteful

Abrasive or soothing

Rough or a dream

Anything

Like them,

We can embody qualities on both sides too
