A Life Sentence

It's just a five-letter word, Grief

How can a five-letter word hold within itself so much power

The weight of its complexities is like a ton of bricks holding down a feather

Hiding in the deep recesses of the mind like a predator teasing its prey

Waiting until almost forgotten

Striking in the moments when it knows you’re all alone, defenses down

A five-letter word like a knife to an already broken heart causing tears to fall

Puddles turning into lakes in which to drown

Every day an unknown of when it may strike again

Always teetering on the edge looking down into an endless abyss

“Grief is a life sentence of carrying around a broken heart.”
